I still can’t seem to fully get rid of my cold and I ended up overlining my lips to the point of ridiculousness. BUT! Non-makeup related but important. It’s Behcets Disease Awareness Day! Yay! Well, not yay, but maybe it will get some knowledge out into the world about this weird illness. I was diagnosed back in 2003 with this whacky illness. It’s 16 years later and I still often hear from doctors “I never heard of Behcet’s before. I had to look it up on Google.” And since I get asked this often, it’s pronounced multiple ways: Beh SHETS, Beh SHAY and Beh CHETs. Behcet’s is rare. Very rare. Super duper rare. It affects approximately only 20,000 people in the United States. Only 1 per 1 million people in the United States and UK populations combined has Behcet’s. There is no cure and it at times is fatal. It’s kind of like a crockpot soup recipe of autoimmune diseases. It’s like having Lupus, MS (Multiple Sclerosis), Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and Vasculitis conditions often at the same time. It can also lead to secondary illnesses, such as Dystonia, that I developed in 2013 which has affected my mobility where I am unable to walk and need a wheelchair. Each person with the illness is affected differently. Some have horrific symptoms and some people experience less severe issues. You can look perfectly fine and healthy yet your body is doing some crazy and scary stuff behind the scenes. This leads to a lot of people being called hypochondriacs or having to prove that they are sick. Which is crazy! Hopefully days like this spread a little bit of awareness and one day a doctor in the emergency room won’t have to call my rheumatologist to ask what my disease is and how to treat it. So if you know someone who suffers from a chronic illness or invisible illness, give them some love. And to all of my fellow Behcet’s warriors, I toast my nachos in your honor!
